Whitley Awards for Grassroots Conservation Leaders in Global South

Overview: The Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN) seeks nominations for the Whitley Awards to support dynamic, mid-career conservationists leading wildlife conservation projects in the Global South. The awards aim to highlight the work of grassroots conservation leaders.

Funding Information:

  • Worth £50,000 in project funding.
  • Projects must start in, or shortly after June 2025.
  • Projects must last no longer than 12 months.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Projects based in countries not defined as a High Income Economy by the World Bank, with some exceptions.
  • Support for nationals of the country where the project is based, or those with long-term residency and commitment.
  • Grassroots conservationists embedded in or from the local communities, working for or leading locally incorporated NGOs.
  • Good communicators, collaborators, and leaders with strong evidence-based projects.
  • Projects must demonstrate measurable outcomes, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability.

Ineligible:

  • Expatriates and pure academic research without applied aspects.
  • MSc/PhD fieldwork and expeditions not related to a project.
  • Start-up or pilot projects; evidence of prior success is essential.
  • Absentee leaders and individuals who do not promote team leadership or collaboration.
