Wellcome Early-Career Awards

Purpose: The Wellcome Early-Career Awards support early-career researchers from any discipline to develop their research identity and lead independent research programmes. Successful applicants will use innovative projects to advance understanding in human life, health, and wellbeing.

Funding Details:

  • Salary and Research Expenses: Up to £400,000 for research expenses, with additional funding for overseas allowances, overheads, and adjustment support if eligible.
  • Duration: Typically 5 years, though shorter durations may apply depending on the discipline or part-time status.

Funding Focus:

  • Fundamental biological processes and human health complexities
  • Disease burden and its determinants
  • Development of methodologies, technologies, or tools for health-related research
  • Social, ethical, cultural, and economic contexts of health and disease

Exclusions:

  • Large clinical trials or population interventions primarily focused on drug or product development
  • Development of tools or technologies primarily for clinical use
  • Study of non-zoonotic animal diseases
  • Stand-alone resources (e.g., databases) unless essential for the research

Eligibility:

  • Open to individuals based in the UK, Republic of Ireland, and low- and middle-income countries, with international co-applicants allowed
  • Applicants must be early-career researchers with a PhD or equivalent higher research degree, or at least four years of equivalent research experience

Requirements:

  • A substantive period of research training relevant to the discipline
  • Evidence of project delivery and analysis
  • Ability to complete the research with minimal supervision

Additional Details:

  • Sponsor: Must be an established individual at the administering organization
  • Mentor: Recommended, but not required to be based at the administering organization
  • Collaborators: Can be included but are not paid; costs for their expenses can be requested

Ineligibility:

  • You are not eligible to apply if you have an existing tenured (salaried) post for the duration of the award (unless based in a low- or middle-income country).
  • You have made an application to this scheme and are waiting for a decision.
  • You hold, or have held, an equivalent award at this career stage. An equivalent award does not include short-term funding.
