USIP Peace Scholar Fellowship Program (United States)



The USIP Peace Scholar Fellowship program awards non-residential fellowships to Ph.D. candidates enrolled in U.S. universities who are writing doctoral dissertations related to conflict management, peacebuilding, and security studies.

Overview

The program partners with the Minerva Research Initiative to support additional fellowships. The program awards up to 18 fellowships per year, supporting both the research and writing stages of dissertations.

Research Topics

This fellowship supports research that advances understanding in conflict management, peacebuilding, and security studies. USIP prefers applications that align closely with the USIP mission and/or the research priorities of the Minerva Research Initiative.

Funding Information

Peace Scholar fellows receive a stipend of up to $20,000, disbursed in three tranches. The combined amount of funding from USIP and other funders must not exceed $50,000 during the 10-month fellowship period.

Eligibility Criteria

Ph.D. candidates enrolled at U.S. universities who have completed all required coursework and comprehensive exams are eligible to apply.

Fellowship Requirements

Peace Scholars are expected to:

  • Participate in-person at the annual Peace Scholar workshop in Washington, D.C. in September 2025.
  • Submit quarterly dissertation progress reports signed by their dissertation advisor.
  • Provide updates for the USIP Peace Scholar seasonal newsletter.
  • Participate in two virtual roundtable discussions.
  • Submit a copy of their completed dissertation to USIP.
  • Share copies of any other publications, including articles and books, resulting from the fellowship.
