Up to $40,000 available for UNESCO Natural World Heritage Sites

The Rapid Response Facility is pleased to announce an open call for applications to provide funding for conservation emergencies in UNESCO natural World Heritage sites.

Conservation efforts in a UNESCO natural World Heritage site, showcasing emergency response to protect biodiversity.

Funding Information:

  • Up to $40,000 available.

RRF Criteria:

  • The site must be located in an eligible country:
    • RRF grants are restricted to countries eligible for ‘official development assistance’ according to the OECD. A list of eligible countries can be found here.
    • Overseas territories of developed countries may occasionally be considered; please contact the Secretariat for advice.
  • The site must be a listed UNESCO natural World Heritage site (or an internationally recognized site of high biodiversity value):
    • RRF grants are available for UNESCO natural World Heritage sites. The list of UNESCO World Heritage sites can be found here; UNESCO cultural World Heritage sites are not eligible for RRF funding.
  • In rare cases, other high-priority protected areas may be considered:
    • Sites on the tentative World Heritage list (natural or mixed categories) can be found here.
    • Sites that impact the ‘outstanding universal values’ (OUV) of a natural World Heritage site or have other international designations (e.g., UNESCO Man & Biosphere Reserves, Ramsar sites).
  • Applications must address a sudden emergency situation:
    • The RRF funds actions facing an ‘emergency’ threat to biodiversity, not ongoing issues. The definition of emergency includes suddenness, unpredictability, time sensitivity, and the duration/reversibility of impact.
  • Applications must be from an eligible organization:
    • Eligible organizations include government bodies, registered local/national/international NGOs, and private sector organizations. Applications must be from organizations that can accept funds directly from the UK in US Dollars (USD).
