Purpose

This award offers eligible applicants the opportunity to take up to twelve months to focus on a research project of their choice. Funding will cover the appointment of a temporary replacement, enabling the awardee to take research leave while remaining in continuous employment. Note that the award does not pay the applicant's salary but funds research costs and staff replacements for teaching and administrative tasks.

Funding Information

  • Research costs are funded up to £5,000.
  • Replacement staff costs will be reimbursed 100% up to a salary of £45,000 (including on-costs).
  • Project duration: 12 months.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be members of academic staff on open-ended or continuing contracts in a higher education institution (HEI), further education institute (FEI), research institution (RI), or cultural institution (CI) in Scotland.
  • Applicants on fixed-term contracts should ensure their contracts extend at least three months after the project ends.
  • The award is open to early and mid-career researchers.
  • Early career researchers must be within seven years of their PhD award.
  • Mid-career researchers should be within 15 years of their doctorate.
  • The research can be in any academic discipline, and the applicant must pursue their research in a HEI, FEI, RI, or CI in Scotland.
