About the Fellowship

The Bill Lane Center for the American West has been supporting journalism on the West and its environment for over a decade. The fellowship allows journalists to:

  • Interact with Stanford researchers, scholars, and students
  • Develop or work on a project of their own design
  • Advance coverage and understanding of the American West

Project Focus

Stanford University is particularly interested in supporting projects that:

  • Intersect with ongoing research at Stanford and the Bill Lane Center
  • Address significant challenges facing the American West
  • Explore new possibilities for journalism and media in the region

Funding Information

The Fellowship offers a $7,500 stipend for three to six months of work. Half of the grant is given when the fellow is selected, and the remaining half upon publication of the story. The award will support a journalist illuminating crucial issues concerning the region.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The work should examine a crucial aspect of the West, including its land, people, history, and the forces driving its economies
  • The applicant must have ties to a news organization guaranteeing serious consideration of publishing the work
  • Publication should occur within six to nine months of the award or by August 11, 2025
  • The work can take various forms, including print or online articles, photo essays, podcasts, video journalism, documentaries, and more

Application Requirements

Applications should include a description of the proposed project, a brief resume, and the name of the news organization or outlet where the work will be published.
