Submissions Open for 4th Documentary Slate (South Africa)

The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) is inviting eligible production companies to submit proposals for the 4th Documentary Slate funding. This initiative aims to support and cultivate viable production companies and to enhance the presence of South African films in both local and international markets.

Objectives

  • Cultivate sustainable and viable production companies.
  • Assist companies in identifying and producing films that demonstrate audience awareness in the South African and international markets.
  • Find original ways of reaching audiences nationwide.
  • Increase the marketing and export of South African film products globally.
  • Promote greater cooperation between production and distribution companies.

Funding Information

The budget for the 4th Documentary Slate is capped at R7,500,000.00, distributed over three years as follows:

  • R2,250,000.00 – For full development of 9 concepts, with a 25% cap for overheads.
  • R5,250,000.00 – To produce 3 films.

Eligibility Criteria

  • 51% black-owned and managed companies with a unique proposal.
  • Preference will be given to female-owned companies.
  • Producers must be South African citizens or permanent residents.
  • Tier 1 and Tier 2 Production Companies may apply:
    • Tier 1: Experienced filmmakers with a proven track record of 3-5 theatrically released feature films.
    • Tier 2: Filmmakers with 1-2 theatrical feature films, television fiction, documentaries, 2-3 short films, or commercials seeking to venture into feature film development and production.
  • Companies should demonstrate an understanding of packaging and marketing feature films.
  • A clear training and development strategy is an added advantage but not compulsory.
  • Established relationships with local distributors and/or international sales agents with a letter of intent.

Ineligibility Criteria

  • Previous recipients of NFVF funding in animation slates, documentary slates, fiction slates, youth, and female filmmaker projects are not eligible.
  • Individuals and/or production companies with 4 active NFVF-funded projects across various stages of development are ineligible.

Selection Criteria

  • Quality of the concept proposal.
  • Capacity and capability of the company to deliver at global standards.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Consistency of budgets and a detailed project plan for 3 years.
  • Distribution and marketing plan.
  • Unique selling point in terms of sustainability and contribution to industry transformation.
  • Finance plan and strategy for sourcing funds.
  • Business plan and 5-year growth strategy for the production company.
  • Experience of the creative team and a clear revenue generation strategy for the entire business.
