Submissions are now open for the Screen BC Short Film Award, designed to support emerging filmmakers in developing their directing careers by realizing a unique creative vision in a short film project.

About the Award

The Screen BC Short Film Award (formerly known as the MPPIA Short Film Award) aims to recognize and celebrate the contribution of film and television to the Province of British Columbia. This award provides an exceptional opportunity for one emerging filmmaker to advance their directing career.

Funding Information

  • A cash award of $15,000.
  • Services “in-kind” valued up to $100,000 from across the industry.
  • Support includes project completion guidance from experienced industry professionals and services provided by top supply houses in British Columbia.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be the Director of the proposed project (one application per Director, no Co-Directors).
  • Must be 19 years of age or older.
  • Must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Must currently reside in British Columbia and have lived there for at least 12 months prior to application.
  • Must have creative control and final editorial authority over the proposed project.
  • Must be a graduate from a post-secondary institution or recognized film school, or have equivalent industry experience.
  • Must have directed and completed at least two short films or television projects demonstrating expertise and creativity.
  • Must not have directed more than 60 minutes of professional live-action, documentary, dramatic, or comedic films (excluding student films).
  • Must agree to grant Screen BC, Creative BC, and the Whistler Film Festival the right to screen and exploit the completed film for non-commercial purposes.
  • Must agree to the world premiere screening of the completed short film at the Whistler Film Festival in winter 2025.
  • Previous MPPIA Short Film Award recipients are not eligible to apply again.

Application Deadline

Applications must be submitted by 30th September 2024.
