The SciComm Identities Project (SCIP) is inviting applications for its fellowship program designed to test a training curriculum based on intercultural communication theories. This program aims to enhance the representation of underrepresented minority scientists and engineers as science communicators in environmental news coverage.

Fellowship Goals
The SCIP Fellowship is a one-year professional development opportunity for pre-tenure faculty at U.S. institutions who identify as underrepresented racial or ethnic minorities. The goals of the fellowship include:
- Fostering confidence and science communication skills that can be implemented throughout the Fellows’ careers.
- Emphasizing the importance of science communication among tenure-track faculty.
- Facilitating the transfer of these skills to Fellows’ students and colleagues.
Fellowship Thematic Focus
The SCIP Fellowship will have different thematic focuses for each of its three one-year cohorts:
- January – December 2024, Cohort 2: Water
- January – December 2025, Cohort 3: Food
Funding Information
Fellows will receive:
- A $5,000 honorarium as an acknowledgment of the required time commitment.
- Reimbursement for roundtrip travel, 5 nights’ lodging, ground transportation, and per diem for meals not provided during in-person training sessions.
- An audio recorder for use in podcast development.
The training sessions will be developed collaboratively by the Metcalf Institute and Knight Center teams, featuring diverse perspectives on science communication as an intercultural practice.
Eligibility Criteria
The fellowship is open to:
- Tenure-track assistant professors at U.S. academic institutions who self-identify as Black or African American, Indigenous or Native American, Hispanic or Latino/a/x/e, Asian or Asian American, or Middle Eastern or North African.
- Researchers studying any aspect of natural science, social science, or engineering related to the year's cohort theme. The 2025 cohort will focus on climate change intersections with agriculture, aquaculture, and food security.
The fellowship is only open to pre-tenure (assistant professor level) faculty, postdoctoral scholars with a confirmed tenure track position starting by August 2025, and graduate students with a confirmed tenure track position starting by January 2025.
