The 2024 competition introduces a new major award: ‘The Valerie Taylor Underwater Photography Award for Excellence.’

- Behavior: Capturing natural behavior of marine life.
- Macro: Close-up photography of marine life.
- Threatened Species: Highlighting endangered species in the Northern Beaches Aquatic Reserves, e.g. Black Rod Cod, Grey Nurse Shark, Green Turtle.
- Human Connection: Illustrating human interaction with marine life.
- Seascapes: Underwater landscapes from Northern Beaches aquatic reserves.
- Youth (12-17 years): Underwater Youth Photographer of the Year 2024.
- Reels: Capturing underwater biodiversity in short videos.
- People’s Choice: Voted online by the public.
Award Information
A prize pool of $4,000 is available for participants, and images must be from one of the five aquatic reserves on the Northern Beaches.
Eligibility Criteria
- Limit of 3 photo entries per photographer (plus 1 reel, if applicable).
- Entries must be original works produced between 1 January and 15 September 2024.
- Youth entrants must be aged 12–17 on 15 September 2024, and those under 18 must have parental consent.
- Images and reels must not have won first place in other major competitions within the last 12 months.
- Employees of Northern Beaches Council are ineligible, but their children may participate.
