Program Overview

The Finnish Centre of Excellence (CoE) call consists of two stages. In the first stage, applicants submit a plan of intent, and selections for the second stage are made based on the initial review.

A Centre of Excellence is a research community striving for or already at the international forefront of research in its field. CoEs can consist of one or multiple research teams working together under a joint research plan.

CoEs funded by the Research Council of Finland are world-class research communities with the potential for renewal and significant societal impact. These programmes contribute to the evolution of science by introducing new research topics, methods, and teams. The long-term funding from CoE host organisations encourages risk-taking and new research initiatives.

The CoE term is eight years, divided into two parts (5 + 3 years), and funding is granted based on scientific quality, contribution to scientific renewal, and scientific impact.

Funding Information

The Research Council of Finland is prepared to allocate up to 65M€ to the selected CoEs for the first five-year period. The final funding will depend on the Finnish Parliament's allocation of the necessary funds to the Research Council.

Who Can Apply?

Funding is open to consortia of research teams. The consortium may consist of one or more research organisations, and the application is based on a joint research plan. Each consortium party applies for their respective funding, but the Research Council treats the consortium application as a single entity, with funding granted to each subproject individually.

Ineligible Applicants

In the 2024 CoE call, the following are ineligible:

  • Applications by project PIs, deputy PIs, or research team leaders from the 2022–2029 CoE programme.
  • Applications by project PIs from ongoing Finnish Flagship projects.
  • An SRC consortium PI's application can be considered if the PI will no longer have overlapping SRC consortium funding after 31 December 2025.
