The Innovation Exchange (iX) program, in partnership with the Greater South East Net Zero Hub, is supporting Reading Borough Council in finding an innovative digital system to integrate and balance its power generation, future energy storage, and usage (such as EV Charging) in a technology-agnostic manner.

The Challenge
Reading Council seeks innovative companies that can provide integrated low-carbon control systems at TRL 5 or above. These systems should work with an electric vehicle fleet and a built environment designed to incorporate emerging physical and digital technologies.
The integrated energy management system should have the following capabilities:
- Unified Control Interface: Develop a user-friendly control system (app or similar) that links to comprehensive control software. It should manage energy inputs/outputs for balance and cost optimization, allowing for various user access levels.
- Multi-Level Dashboard: Provide a system with high-level and operation-level dashboards for overall energy/vehicle management and daily management, respectively, including alert-based systems. It should also offer a grid-level interface for peer-to-peer energy trading and grid connection.
- Energy Self-Management: Enable a high degree of energy self-management at the depot, reducing grid dependence and maximizing flexibility services opportunities.
- Smart Charging: Implement systems to optimize the depot’s vehicle charging both day and night, minimising human intervention.
Benefits
Successful applicants will have the opportunity to pitch to Reading Borough Council. Selected solutions may be trialled with potential for wider adoption. Additional benefits may include:

Eligibility Criteria
Entrants to this competition are expected to be:
- Established businesses, test houses, academic institutions, startups, SMEs, or individual entrepreneurs
- UK-based or planning to establish a UK base
