Innovate UK is supporting Ocean Winds (a joint venture between ENGIE and EDP Renewables) in finding innovative solutions for the offshore wind industry's subsea 3D sub-bottom profile measurement challenge.
The Challenge
Ocean Winds seeks solutions to provide a 3D ultra-high resolution (UHR) survey of offshore wind sites to improve data interpretability and availability during the early development of wind farms. The goal is to reduce uncertainty, risk, and costs, and to develop an automated system that minimizes the need for resources such as vessels, time, and personnel. Potential approaches include:
- Automating the vessel, such as using an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) to move operational control from the vessel to an office or delivery vehicle, thus reducing transportation costs.
- Enhancing the sensors aboard the vessel to capture 3D data more efficiently.
- Improving the speed and power requirements of data processing after collection.
- Exploring other innovative approaches to conventional subsea survey methods.
