Applications are now open for the Ishibashi Foundation/Japan Foundation Fellowship to support the development of professionals specializing in Japanese visual arts. This opportunity is available for curators and researchers from abroad to conduct research in Japan, promoting the study of the field and the introduction of Japanese art overseas.

Benefits
Successful applicants (referred to as “Fellows”) will receive:
- Per Diem: 17,000 yen/day
- Airfare: Round-trip discount economy-class airfare (the most direct route)
- Insurance: Overseas traveler's insurance policy (coverage determined by the Ishibashi Foundation/Japan Foundation)
- Research Allowance: A maximum of 100,000 yen (amount varies according to the duration of the Fellowship)
- Fellowship Period: 21 days to 59 days
Eligible Activities
Research projects related to Japanese visual arts should have clear objectives and plans. The project should require travel to Japan for intensive research over a short period. Priority is given to projects that propose sharing research results widely through exhibitions or publications.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be nationals (or permanent residents) of countries with diplomatic relations with Japan
- Be in good physical and mental health
- Be proficient in Japanese or English
- Be able to stay continuously in Japan for the duration of the fellowship
- Not violate the law or regulations of their own country by receiving the fellowship
- Not apply for other Japan Foundation grant programs
- Previous recipients may reapply only if at least three years have elapsed since the end of their last fellowship
Ineligibility Criteria
Applicants who meet any of the following conditions are not eligible:
- Intend to conduct research outside of Japanese visual arts
- Intend to create artworks
- Are undergraduates, master’s degree candidates, or pursuing Ph.D. courses in Japan
- Intend to use the fellowship for political or religious purposes
- Intend to work for profit-making or fund-raising purposes
- Intend to enhance their Japanese-language ability
- Plan to receive other grants concurrently
- Apply for other Japan Foundation grant programs in the same fiscal year
