The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is launching the Humanities Research Centers on Artificial Intelligence Program to foster a more comprehensive understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) in today’s world. This program will support the creation of new humanities research centers on AI at eligible institutions.

A Center under this program promotes collaboration among scholars to investigate AI-related topics through research and share their findings through educational or outreach activities. The program seeks to enhance scholarly discourse on AI from a humanities perspective.

  • Maximum Award: Up to $750,000 ($500,000 in outright funds, plus $250,000 in Federal Matching Funds)
  • Duration: Up to 3 years

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, centers must focus on humanities questions and be led by humanists. Centers may include international collaboration, though U.S. institutions must play a significant role in the project.

Note: This program is for the establishment of new centers; existing centers are not eligible. Each institution may only submit one application, except for branch campuses, which can apply separately.
