The Aspen Institute Germany is inviting applications for its Climate Change Program under the Future Cities Go Glocal initiative. This program aims to enhance cities' abilities to address critical issues such as environmental change, energy security, migration, social justice, and inadequate infrastructure.
About the Program
Five urban decision-makers from each participating city—Berlin, New Delhi, Nairobi, and Mexico City—will collaborate both digitally and in-person in Berlin. The program focuses on tackling climate change, energy security, and sustainability challenges.
With more than half of the world's population living in cities, and this number projected to rise to over two-thirds by 2050, cities play a crucial role in addressing climate change and resource consumption. The program seeks innovative approaches to urban sustainability, including lower-emission transportation systems, energy-efficient buildings, and integrated waste and recycling management.
Key Questions Explored
- What measures must cities take to protect themselves against severe weather phenomena and adapt to new circumstances?
- How should the city of tomorrow be designed to ensure climate resilience and energy supply?
- How can social costs for electricity generation be cushioned?
- How can the economic potential of renewable energies in cities be maximized?
Aim and Benefits
The program aims to foster exchanges between city stakeholders to share best practices, build new networks, and develop policy recommendations for sustainable urban development. Participants will:
- Learn about urban practices and policies from each city
- Conduct site visits to see best practices and innovative solutions
- Explore opportunities for intercontinental collaboration
- Develop concrete policy recommendations, published and presented at a final event
Costs for participation, including travel, accommodation, and meals, will be covered by the project.
