The Diversity in Life Sciences Fellows Program is a prestigious one-year fellowship aimed at supporting postdocs and early-career scientists from underrepresented (UR) and disadvantaged backgrounds. This program provides the skills necessary to excel in research careers and leadership roles across academic, industry, and government research sectors.

Program Overview

The program focuses on enhancing confidence, leadership skills, networking opportunities, and visibility within the biological and biomedical research community to optimize career advancement.

Key Training Elements

  • Immersion in SAB Meetings: Fellows will engage with global thought-leaders in academic, industry, and government sectors, participating in peer-review sessions and scientific programming for internationally acclaimed conferences.
  • Leadership Training: Modules held prior to SAB meetings to prepare Fellows and develop career skills essential for critical stages of career development.
  • Mentoring Modules: Tailored mentorship for life science researchers at pivotal career stages, including one-on-one pairing with a distinguished SAB member.
  • Peer-to-Peer Mentorship: Part of the Keystone Symposia DLSP community, offering ongoing support within a diverse life science network.
  • Travel Award Support: Assistance to attend future Keystone Symposia conferences.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and meet one of the following criteria:

  • Underrepresented Racial and Ethnic Groups (e.g., African American/Black, Hispanic/Latinx, Native American/Alaska Native, Hawaiian Native, and U.S. Pacific Islands natives).
  • Individuals with disabilities (defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990).
  • Individuals from disadvantaged or underserved backgrounds (including economically disadvantaged backgrounds, first-generation college graduates, and challenging social or educational backgrounds).
  • Women in the Biotechnology Workforce with a commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Early Career Researchers

Must have a Ph.D., M.D., or M.D.-Ph.D. degree and be engaged in an independent research position in academia, industry, or government. Eligible candidates include:

  • Assistant professors (pre-tenure and less than 6 years in appointment).
  • Research scientists in industry (less than 6 years in position).
  • Research scientists in government (less than 6 years in position).

Postdoctoral Researchers

Must have a Ph.D., M.D., or M.D.-Ph.D. degree and be engaged in research within academia, industry, or government. Eligible candidates include:

  • Postdoctoral researchers with 1 to 4 years of postdoctoral experience.
