The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) invites eligible production companies to submit proposals for the 4th Documentary Slate funding. This initiative aims to support South African production companies in creating original documentaries that have audience awareness both locally and internationally.
Objectives
- Encourage sustainable and viable production companies.
- Support companies in producing films that demonstrate strong audience awareness in South Africa and globally.
- Promote innovative approaches to reaching national audiences.
- Increase the marketing and export of South African films globally.
- Foster collaboration between production and distribution companies.
Funding Information
The total budget is R7,500,000, disbursed over 3 years:
- R2,250,000 for the full development of 9 concepts, with a 25% cap for overheads.
- R5,250,000 to produce 3 films.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify, production companies must meet the following criteria:
- 51% black-owned and managed companies with unique proposals.
- South African citizens or permanent residents must serve as producers.
- Preference will be given to female-owned companies.
- Production companies should fall into Tier 1 (experienced) or Tier 2 (limited experience) categories, as defined by the NFVF.
- Companies must demonstrate an understanding of packaging and marketing feature films.
Ineligibility Criteria
Previous recipients of NFVF funding for animation, documentary, fiction slates, and youth/female filmmaker projects are ineligible. Additionally, companies with four active NFVF-funded projects cannot apply.
Selection Criteria
- Quality and originality of the concept proposal.
- Capacity to deliver projects to global standards.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Consistency of budgets and a detailed 3-year project plan.
- Distribution and marketing strategies.
- Contribution to industry transformation and sustainability.
