Call for Proposals: Implementation of Project on Youth Leadership and Advocacy for LGBTIQ+ Inclusive Education in Japan

Youth-led organizations in Japan working on projects to enhance inclusive education spaces for LGBTIQ+ youth learners, including advocacy activities and collaboration with education communities.

UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok (UNESCO Bangkok) is seeking a youth-led or youth-serving organization in Japan to lead a project aimed at enhancing inclusive education spaces for LGBTIQ+ youth learners. The project, which will run for a maximum of 15 months, focuses on designing, implementing, monitoring, and reporting on initiatives to support LGBTIQ+ inclusive education in formal institutions across Japan.

Project Details

Specific activities under this program will include:

  • Co-creating an advocacy approach with students and student networks.
  • Building advocacy skills for inclusion in education.
  • Working closely with students to carry out advocacy activities.
  • Sharing results and experiences of advocacy efforts with peers, education communities, and the public.

The initiative aims to foster dialogue with educators, parents, and youth organizations to create an enabling educational environment that combats discrimination and violence based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression (SOGIE). The goal is to ensure that all learners feel safe, included, and valued.

Objectives

UNESCO Bangkok seeks to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Strengthen technical and advocacy skills of LGBTIQ+ youth members to promote inclusive learning spaces.
  • Improve inclusivity of learning spaces through tools and approaches implemented by LGBTIQ+ youth leaders in partnership with the education sector.

Since October 2021, the project has aimed to empower LGBTIQ+ students and allies in educational institutions (universities, vocational centers, high schools, etc.) as change agents for inclusion. The selected organization will engage at least 50 youth learners as partners and beneficiaries in advocating for LGBTIQ+ inclusion in education.

Eligibility Criteria

The consultancy is open to suitably qualified youth-led or youth-serving organizations based in Japan.
