Call for Applications: Exhibitions Abroad Support Program (Japan)

Apply for the Japan Foundation's Exhibitions Abroad Support Program to receive financial support for showcasing Japanese art and culture internationally.


Submissions are now open for the Exhibitions Abroad Support Program, which provides financial support for museums and art institutions overseas that organize exhibitions introducing Japanese art and culture to audiences abroad.

Eligible Projects

  • Exhibitions that will open between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026, and that will:
    • Introduce Japanese art and culture, planned and executed by a museum or an art institution abroad;
    • Introduce Japanese artists and their works in the context of international exhibitions held abroad, such as biennials/triennials;
    • Be created through artist-in-residence programs abroad and promote the expansion of networks among artists, curators, and researchers in Japan and overseas, and have a clear concept and concrete plan for exhibitions.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be a foreign museum or art institution (i.e., located outside of Japan).
  • Applicants must have the capacity needed to implement the planned project(s).
  • The receipt of grants or support from the Japan Foundation must not violate any local laws, regulations, or ordinances.
  • Applicants should have a bank account in the name of the organization to which the grant from the Japan Foundation can be remitted, or should be able to open such an account by the time the grant is remitted.

Ineligibility Criteria

  • The Japan Foundation does not provide grants for:
    • Japanese national government organs, local governments, incorporated administrative agencies, and local incorporated administrative agencies;
    • Organizations, institutions, and facilities attached to or established by the organizations in "a." (excluding organizations with their own legal personalities, such as incorporated associations or incorporated foundations);
    • Foreign governments (including their administrative organs, embassies, and consulates-general, but excluding educational, cultural, or research institutes, such as universities or museums); and
    • International organizations to which Japanese national government organs contribute.
