The Collaborative Initiative for Pediatric HIV Education and Research (CIPHER) program addresses research gaps in pediatric and adolescent HIV in countries with limited resources. Awards will provide up to USD 140,000 over two years, covering direct research and applicable indirect costs. Continued funding for the second year depends on satisfactory progress during the first year.
Eligibility Criteria
- The principal investigator (PI) must be an early-stage investigator who obtained their terminal research degree less than 10 years before the application deadline.
- The PI must be serving as PI for the first time. Previous recipients of non-training research grants exceeding USD 30,000 are ineligible.
- The PI must have one of the following prior to the submission deadline:
- A clinical research trainee (fellow, senior resident) at an academic or research institute.
- A faculty or comparable position (assistant professor, lecturer) at an academic or research institute.
- An established position at an organization with adequate research infrastructure.
- The research project should aim to optimize HIV prevention, testing, treatment, or service delivery for infants, children, and adolescents in resource-limited settings.
- Applicants must be from low- and middle-income countries (as per World Bank classification) and hold a passport or national identity document from one of those countries.
- The PI must choose a mentor with expertise in pediatric or adolescent HIV research. A letter of commitment and a mentorship plan will be required from shortlisted applicants.
- At least 80% of the direct grant expenses must be spent in low- and middle-income countries.
- A letter of support from the applicant’s institution and a copy of their terminal research degree or diploma are required.
