The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) PCORI Implementation Grant – Enhancing Healthcare Practices applications for the African Laser Centre (ALC) Knowledge Exchange Programme, supporting the development of centers of expertise in photonics-related fields across Africa.

About the ALC Knowledge Exchange Programme

The ALC is an initiative aimed at promoting innovation, research, and technology development in laser-related disciplines across Africa. Recognized as an AU-NEPAD flagship program, it seeks to establish local, continental, and global partnerships to foster growth in laser technology and applications.

Under the Knowledge Exchange Programme (KEP), African students at the doctoral or master’s level are invited to undertake short-term exchange visits between South African and other African research institutions. The goal is to gain hands-on experience, access specialized equipment, and enhance the research capabilities of their home institutions.

Funding Information

  • Maximum Grant: R60,000
  • Duration: 3 to 6 months
  • Expenses Covered: One return flight ticket, accommodation (up to R7,000 per month), subsistence (R250 per day), and experimental consumables (up to R10,000)

Eligibility Criteria

The programme is open to doctoral and master’s degree students from South Africa or other African countries. The eligibility requirements include:

  • Must be a registered student at a research institution in Africa.

  • A strong motivation for the knowledge exchange.
  • Co-investment or in-kind support from both the applicant’s and the host institution.
  • A letter of support from the host institution.

Applications that emphasize research collaboration without a focus on knowledge exchange will not be considered.

  • Increased capabilities at the home institution.
  • Establishment of research collaborations within the African continent.
  • An exchange visit report to be submitted within six months of the visit.
  • At least one joint publication based on the work conducted.
