The Women and Clean Energy in West Africa (WOCEWA) program, funded by the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) and supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada, is now accepting applications. This initiative aims to promote gender equality in the energy sector by supporting women in STEM through scholarships and green job placements.
Program Overview
Despite the significant contributions of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), they remain underrepresented in energy sectors. WOCEWA seeks to address this imbalance by providing financial aid and internships to women pursuing energy-related studies.
Reasons for the gender gap in STEM and energy fields include:
- Stereotypes discouraging girls from pursuing STEM careers
- Lack of female role models in these fields
- Unconscious bias in the workplace
WOCEWA aims to provide the necessary support to help young women gain expertise in clean energy technologies and establish careers in this vital sector.
Benefits
The WOCEWA project offers several benefits to selected scholars:
- Scholarships: Up to US$3,200 per year for a maximum of two years. This includes:
- Tuition fee and health insurance up to US$2,500, paid directly to the institution. Any excess or shortfall will be managed by the applicant.
- A computer with a maximum value of US$700
- Internship program lasting six months with a monthly stipend of $800 to cover travel, insurance, and subsistence
- Internship opportunities at ECREEE, West African Power Pool (WAPP), ECOWAS Regional Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERERA), ECOWAS Gender Development Centre (EGDC), and other ECREEE partners.
- Scholarship renewal for the second year is contingent on maintaining high grades following the first-year exams.
Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the WOCEWA Scholarship, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Be a citizen of an ECOWAS Member State
- Be enrolled in the first year of a master's degree program in a university or institution in West Africa
- Be female with a STEM background focusing on energy
- Be 32 years old or younger by the end of 2024
- Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5/5 (Upper Second-Class equivalent of 14/20 for the francophone system)
- Not currently hold another scholarship from a different organization
