The MARIO Programme, a collaboration between Minority Rights Group Europe (MRGE) and PILnet, is now accepting applications. This initiative supports grassroots Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Bulgaria, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Latvia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Romania, and Slovenia. The goal is to enhance the promotion and protection of EU values and fundamental rights through financial support and capacity building.
Program Objectives
- Equip CSOs representing minority groups with tools for raising awareness on EU Fundamental Rights and values.
- Strengthen and sustain minority CSOs through financial support.
- Increase knowledge and understanding of EU fundamental values among minority communities.
- Enhance community capacities to hold authorities accountable through national and European human rights mechanisms.
- Raise awareness among minority communities about EU fundamental rights and their impact on daily life.
- Improve decision-makers' understanding of minority concerns and influence policy changes.
- Promote media coverage and public awareness through campaigns and research.

Eligible Activities
- Local accountability projects, such as workshops and dialogues addressing community-local authority issues.
- Investigative projects addressing gaps in the rule of law.
- Projects that foster democratic participation and advocate for minority inclusion.
- Legal capacity projects, including direct legal advice and mediator training.
- Local advocacy campaigns supporting policy changes to address minority concerns.
Eligibility Criteria
- Registered legal entities, non-profit organizations, and active CSOs in target countries.
- Must have a bank account, be free of public debt, and comply with GDPR and anti-corruption measures.
- Commitment to EU fundamental rights and values.
- Desirable: balanced gender composition or community representation in leadership and team structure.
- Small, local, grassroots CSOs representing minority and vulnerable groups with strong community trust.
