The British Academy is now accepting applications for its International Writing Workshops, aimed at fostering professional networks and mentorship for early career researchers in developing countries. These workshops help equip researchers with the knowledge and skills to meet academic journal requirements and publish in international journals.

The Writing Workshops are designed to support early career researchers in developing countries by:

  • Stimulating professional networks and research partnerships
  • Encouraging skills development
  • Providing career development advice
  • Promoting the publication of research from developing countries in high-impact journals in the humanities and social sciences

The workshops act as a career intervention, aiming to change long-term academic culture and improve engagement with the wider research ecosystem.

Funding Information

Awards are set at a maximum of £30,000. The funding covers the direct delivery of workshops, including:

  • Travel and related expenses
  • Subsistence costs
  • Clerical assistance and consumables
  • Childcare support (for participants)
  • Networking, meeting, and conference costs

The award duration is two years to account for follow-on activities.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The lead applicant must be based at a UK university or eligible research institute, be postdoctoral or above in status, and have a fixed-term or permanent position for the award's duration.
  • All proposals must be ODA-eligible and focus on the economic development and welfare of developing countries.

ODA Criteria

ODA is defined as official flows to DAC-listed countries, with the primary goal of promoting the economic development and welfare of those countries. The workshops must be held in Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa, Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam, or Least Developed Countries.
