Overview

The International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) Committee invites applications for its annual poster contest. The theme for 2025 is "Sustainable Communities Begin with Compost!" This theme aims to highlight the importance of composting across various community scales, from backyard composters to large-scale facilities.

Benefits of Composting

  • Reduces Methane Emissions: Composting through aerobic managed decomposition provides a more sustainable community.
  • Lowers Greenhouse Gases: Improves carbon sequestration in soil, serving as a “carbon bank” by removing carbon from the atmosphere.
  • Provides Essential Nutrients: Compost promotes vibrant gardens and farms, leading to healthier and more nutritious food.
  • Increases Water-Holding Capacity: Enhances soil’s ability to retain water, important for drought and erosion management.
  • Supports Community Gardens: Fosters green spaces that offer fresh produce, recreational opportunities, and community gathering places.

Prize Information

The overall winner will receive a $500 prize.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to ages 10 – 13.
  • International contest.
  • Design must relate to “Composting in My Community.”
  • Designs must be 3”x 8”. Other sizes will not be accepted.
  • Designs can be drawn on the paper template or submitted as a .jpg file, keeping the dimensions at 3”x 8”.
  • AI-generated designs will not be accepted.
