Overview

PCORI’s Funding Announcement (PFA) for Advancing the Science of Engagement, also known as the “SoE PFA,” aims to fund studies addressing high-priority gaps in the science of engagement in research. This includes the development and assessment of engagement measures and evaluation of engagement methods. For measurement proposals, PCORI prefers projects that rapidly develop or assess the validity of measures of engagement.

Priorities

Measuring Engagement in Research (Category 1)

This category aims to develop reliable and valid measures for future research. Priorities for Cycle 3 2024 include:

  • Structure/Context: Measures assessing key contextual factors such as stakeholder diversity, barriers and facilitators, and capacity for engagement.
  • Process: Measures evaluating how engagement is conducted, including participation of diverse partners and systematic description of activities.
  • Outcomes: Measures assessing the impact of engagement, including patient-centeredness, relevance of findings, and participant diversity.

Developing and Testing Engagement Methods in Research (Category 2)

This category supports research projects evaluating the impact of various engagement methods on research processes and outcomes. Priorities for Cycle 3 2024 include:

  • Which engagement methods work best in specific settings, especially for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Which methods result in high-quality engagement, particularly for underrepresented populations.
  • How engagement methods can be adapted for different stakeholder groups, including historically excluded populations.
  • Which methods achieve goals like making research more patient-centered, timely, relevant, and culturally sensitive.
